470 - 2020 in conclusion - Books

Oh dear... the previous update was in April. What did I say? I can't up hold my own promises to keep updating, at least once a month. ONCE A MONTH!! It's not that hard!!!!!!!

Ok, as usual, compiling the lists of books and movies I have seen this year so far.

From Goodreads, I had read 50 books so far. Woohoo! Including 4 mangas in it. If I really wanted to add in mangas into the list, it would be a way longer list, so, I will just exclude the mangas (picture books are counted), making it to 46 books this year. Yay! Much much more than the previous 2 years combined!

Ok, here goes the list of books, in reading order.

25th - The Blackstone Ritual by Swearinger Durham

What a looong list. So happy to read so many books this year! Mainly because of the COVID thing, I got the time to stay at home and read. Read. Read. From Goodreads, the shortest book I read was < The Fox and the Star> 80 pages, and the longest book was <Winter> with 824 pages. The difference!!

Anyway, I got to buy lots and lots of books. We started ordering bookcrates too. Lol. All the way from U.K. and U.S.. The shipping fees made me cried. Hahahaha!!

Very honorable mentions that were not in the list, I finished the whole Haikyuu!! manga this year!!! I got up to speed on time for the author to finish off the story this year!!! If you haven't read it, go try it!! Really, really good sports manga. If you find it difficult to jump straight to manga, try the anime first. Just the first 2 seasons are enough, and then try reading the manga. Yay! Another series I finished this year was Battle Rabbits. I reread it again.

I read the most number of books in April, 10 books? Lol. That was lockdown month I think? Or later? Anyway, this year, I finished off a few series/trilogies sort of.  Faerie Wars Chronicles, Six of Crows, The Lunar Chronicles, Shades of Magic, and the Winternight Trilogy. I practically polished off The Lunar Chronicles in a month. Sis said I was reading too fast that I didn't enjoy the books fully. Well... maybe? But I just want to know what happen next!

There are a few surprise reads for me:

Six of Crows & Crooked Kingdom

Sis introduced me to this dulogy. These were high pace and no nonsense. Love it. Six main casts doing illegal high-stake stuffs. Yay. And the dynamic between the 6 of them.

Howl's Moving Castle & Castle in the Air

So different from the animation movies! They have more characters in the books! All told from one person pov.

The Lunar Chronicles

I never would have thought I would have like an East Asian character in an YA book so much. KAI!!!! KAI!!! And Cinder is a half? I think??? I'm not sure anymore, but KAI!!! EMPEROR KAITO!!!!

Winternight Trilogy

My favourite trilogy I've read this year, I think. Initially, it was not easy for me to "get into" the book. After a few chapters, I got the hang of how the author might want the flow of the story to go, I got slowly into it. And.I.Am.Not.Disappointed. This Russia folklore-theme story, I never thought I would have like it that much. Story started of with main character being a child, and gradually grew up to an adult throughout the story. It's painful to grow up, reminded me of the Httyd books. Really painful.

Sabriel

Ahhh!!! I like Sabriel!!! So much that I find it difficult to read the second book in the series, because it's not about her anymore. T.T And then I found out what happend, I lost interest in the 3rd book. >_>

Anything from V.E. Schwab

Shades of Magic, City of Ghosts and Addie LaRue. Read 5 books from her, City was for younger readers and felt so different from Shades, and Addie LaRue is a total different direction. The writings in Addie LaRue was so beautiful. Really.

Well then, those were for 2020.

Now onwards to 2021. How many books should I put in the Goodreads challenge? 25 books, I don't want to set the target to high or I will get intimidated. I have a few books I want to start on. My "Want to read" list in Goodreads is forever growing. XDDD It's 59 books now. Hahahaha!!!

So, I am aiming to finish The Great Library, The Trials of Apollo, Stalking Jack the Ripper (2 books left in my list!!), Gilded Wolves series/trilogies/duologies. And some other standalone books! Hope this would be another great year in reading for me. Wanted to enjoy it to the fullest! :)

469 - Lockdown, anyone?

How's everyone doing during the lockdown?

Every country's situation is different. Here, we are only onto our 12th? 13th? day of lockdown. So far I am comfortable with it. Glad that the company let us take unpaid leave, we really don't want to risk it as our job is ranked having the highest risk among other health profession for some reason. I still don't really see the point in continue on operating if you guys just kept accepting patients that are not "emergency".

Anyway, moving on from that.

People thought we might get bored staying at home for that long, instead, we kinda enjoy it. You see, we rarely have time to do so while working. We only have less than 12 hours staying at home for normal days, and we work 6 days a week. We hate it. I one another off days to do normal stuffs like house chores. We only have Sundays off, and what? You expect me to clean the house that day? We are exhausted. Duh.

Next next next... I don't want to dwell on unhappy thoughts.

Sooooo, lockdown time, I got to do lots of reading. :) No the quantity of books but the period of time I get to spend on them. :))))))

In March, I read 3 books. And for April, so far I have finished 2 books, 1 of them of which I have been reading since last year, hahaha. I am reading my 6th book of the year, according to Goodreads.

So...continue on reading!! And continue on shopping for books!!! :)))

465 - 2019 Read list

I was wondering, why am I so persistent on doing this every year? Despite my blog being dead the majority of the year. Maybe I like listing out things I have done so far? Even though it's not impressive at all. Anyway, let's get on with it. This will be a very short list. Trust me.

BECAUSE I HAVE ONLY READ EIGHT BOOKS THIS YEAR! .

What the hell...

I have been reading other stuffs online and so, not physical books. And also, I have so many books on hold. I didnt even finish them... excuses...

December
13th - The Royal Rabbits of London (The Royal Rabbits of London #1) by Santa Montefiore, Simon Sebag Montefiore

Hm... All of them are categorised under Children's book. :) Can't help it. Children's book have nicer illustrations and so entertaining to read. I am tired of political stuffs in novels sometimes. So, Children's books, yeah.

Some honorable mentions are:
Good Omens
The Purple Emperor

Good Omens I have started reading it since the show ended. Progress is quite slow, but it's getting there. I should be able to finish it before June in 2020. Hopefully. As for The Purple Emperor, that might have a faster progress. I am more invested in that, I think.

For 2020, I was thinking of going into Artemis Fowl. Seeing that the movie is coming out, was wondering whether the publishers will reprint the books or make new illustrations of the books. We bought the first book recently, a new book cover of course. I have no idea which version is mine, the one back in home town. I can't seem to find it anywhere in bookstores now. I hope the movie is good, so they can green light the following sequels, IF there is a sequel.

Children's books are so pretty. And they easily come in hardcovers!!!!! I used to find it a bit awkward when I roamed about in the Children's section in libraries. Now I don't, just headed straight there once I stepped through the doors. Lol.

All the books were from the local libraries, hence the code on the upper left of the books.

Oh yeah, before I forgot, I want to mention that I'm getting more and more in love with Cressida Cowell's illustrations. I find it more and more... life like in Once's series. In the Dragons's series, it was funny sometimes, but then in the Once's series, I was in awe. Like I can spend a full minute looking at one illustration in the book. Wow.

Soooo, for my Reading resolutions for 2020, again, 10 books. Hahahahaha.

448 - Book covers matter!!!

I picked up Clash Of The Sky Galleons and started reading again.

Yup.

Once I am a few pages into it, I can't really stop, except maybe tiredness etc.

I have no idea what I am talking about.

I love Quint and Maris so much. I really like this part of the relationship. Like I usually do. I normally like the part of the relationship where both parties are testing water. They are unsure around each other but they are on sync!!!

As I'm currently on the last book of Quint, I started my hunt on the next book, the first book of Twig. I am trying to collect all the books from the same version. The 2006 version? If I'm not mistaken. I'm not that into the current version. The ... high dark sci-fi feel book covers. I really prefer the covers done by Chris Riddell, be either the 2006 versions or earlier! I am doing my search on Fishpond and found the books, second hands of course, cause they are not publishing the 2006 version anymore. They will have to do, in fact, my first two books are second hands'. Yeeep. Form Fishpond too.

But it's a bit pricey. A bit more than I hope too. But I guess, I am still getting them. As for the next trilogy, I might buy the newer versions, because of the price. They cost like 10 dollars cheaper??? Hell. But it wouldn't look nice together on the shelf!!! Urgh.

Why am I like that????

445 - Books I read in 2016 and some movies

Ok, this is becoming kind of like my blog's ...tradition.

October

November

30th - Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them: The Original Screenplay by J.K. Rowling

December

2nd - Summoner #1 : The Novice by Taran Matharu

Well! It's only 10 books in total!! That's not good. I read only 10 books in 2016?! Really??? I have recorded the books I know I have read in goodreads, but still, this is lesser than I hope for. I still set my reading target for 10 books in 2017, but, secretly hope that I could achieved at least another book more.

Movies on the other hand...

In comparison, I watched tons of movies in 2016. Lots. I kept watching movies repetitively, in cinemas and at home. Over a hundred movies. Hahaha.

2016 was a great year of movies for me.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (My highlight!)
Zootopia
X-men: Apocalypse
The Legend Of Tarzan ( Surprisingly good!!)
Star Trek: Beyond
Suicide Squad
Kubo And The Two Strings
The Magnificent Seven
The Accountant
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children
Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them
ROGUE ONE: A Star Wars Story ( This is a damn surprise for me!!)

Yeep. These are the movies I watched in cinemas, MULTIPLE TIMES. Hehehehe. Watching a movie multiple times is built on the basis that I LOVE THE DAMN MOVIES AND/OR THE CHARACTERS AND/OR CAST.

Sometimes I watched the movie, because of the cast; sometimes the other way round, despite how I dislike the actor or actress.

Until now, I'm still so obsess with Rogue One. Damn!!!

443 - Mid-Autumn and fast reading

Happy Belated Mid-Autumn Day everyone!

That sounds weird.

Let's try it again.

中秋节快乐!!

That sounds better.

This year, we had dinner at our house. :) Well, we have been eating at our house for a few times now since Sis and I were back in town.

Anyway, the kids wanted Jap curry the previous dinner but I was not the one cooking :P. So this time round, I took the initiative to cook it for them.

Bought the beef and ingredients a day ago and boy did they cost me some. It's fresh beef... because! The frozen ones look really awful in the fridges... No price tags too!

blah blah blah

beefy meat. Cost me quite a lot.

While cooking, brother kept coming into the kitchen to look at the progress XDD Oh my. He's keen of the curry. He had been talking about it since morning. He did pester me about wanting to eat curry since... some time ago. Said that he hadn't eaten before etc etc. I don't think that's true. I did cook it once during one of the dinners, and I highly doubt that he wasn't there. Uncle wouldn't let him miss any of family dinners.

After cooking, I took a shower and together with sis and bro went down to fetch Grandmother. Initially I wasn't responsible for that... meh.

By the time we came back, auntie and cousins had arrived, bringing a bowl of FRUITS. Interesting. Grandmother had brought along butter prawns, soup and salad. Hmmm.... OK.

At around 8:15pm, Uncle and Auntie had arrived, running late from a meeting. They brought chicken wing and roast half duck. OK. That's it. So my curry and ended up became a main. HAHAHAHAHA.

Everything was sparkling clean at the end. Lol. And I thought my curry was too much. XD We even cooked the rice twice!

After dinner, we, the kids, continued on with BVS. And you know what, we didn't even get to finish it before it was time for them to leave. OHMYGOD. That was the second time already. Still couldn't finish. It's at the climax! Supes had pushed Doomsday into the space and nukes had reached them. And then PAUSE. Lol

I had the urged to continue on, but then, I would have to fast forward to this specific scene when they are here again the next time. Nah.. I don't want to do that.

A nice evening overall. Pity that youngest cousin was not here with us. She's having dinner with her grandparents.

Moving on....

I finished The Son of Neptune this ....midnight! Yippee!! As stated, I read everything in a wind. Couldn't stop myself.

#2 The Son of Neptune

I love the colour palette of the cover!!

As the book title suggested, this book is about Neptune's children. Yessss. Not child.

My Rome history is not that good. I didn't know that the Romes are afraid of Neptune, the sea God.

The book started off with Percy on the run from two ugly gorgon sisters. He had slept for a long time and woke up with no memories, except his name and the name Annabeth. And Lupa the she-wolf was there with him when he woke up. We learnt in the previous book that Lupa is sort of the couterpart of Chiron, but for Romans. Anyway, Percy trained under Lupa for some time before he was sent to Camp Jupiter.

He knows that he's more calm and powerful around the sea and so on. And he knows how to handle his sword. He found out that the entrance to the camp is tunnel guarded by the campers in Roman battle armour, Frank and Hazel. For some reasons, he had to carry this old lady, Hera in disguise, into the camp, whose weight increased rapidly when he got nearer to the camp. Hazel unable to hold off the gorgons for long and came crashing after Percy and Frank towards the camp.

Ok. Stop there for a while. From what Percy had described about Camp Jupiter, it could easily be mistaken for a highly functional city. I mean, it could be a city, but the population didnt meet the requirements I suppose. With mountains, polished Roman buildings, roads, barracks, fields, temples, and a freaking CITY about a few miles away from the tunnel end.

And then Percy went on Demigod mode and squash the gorgons to dust, using the river.

Everyone in camp regarded Percy wearily. Because as a matter of fact, the Romans hated and are afraid of Neptune and everything related to him. Percy learnt that hard on when he reach his father's suppose temple.

Everything in Camp Jupiter is well discipline. The don't have cabins but cohorts. And everybody in a cohort mingled with each other, nevermind who their parents or ancestors were. Oh ya, different from Camp Half-Blood, not all campers are a child of the gods. Some were grandchildren or further generations. The Demigods lived on in this place, so there's a City in the camp.

And Hazel had explained to Percy, all the campers lived together, instead of being separated by their godly parents. Lol. Camp Half-Blood seems cruel now.

Anyway, they went on a quest to free Death from the Giant, who is born as the bane of Neptune. Along the story, we learnt that Hazel was in fact not a person from this era but way back and Frank was from a family of a special gift, bestowed by the god Neptune. And yep, Frank could be considered the children of Neptune, not directly but related.

Frank's life is literally on a short stick. I mean, when the stick burnt off, he would be dead. He really likes his arrows and quiver and hoped that Apollo would claimed him. But instead, Mars came do Camp Jupiter and claimed him right in front of all the campers. Surprisingly, he didn't really portrayed much of his father's tempers, as Percy observe. Maybe Mars is more of a calm person than Ares.

Hazel on the other hand, is a daughter of Pluto, Nico's half sister. Awwww. Nico apparently is an ambassador of Pluto in the camp. XD He comes and goes as he wishes. While looking for Bianca's soul in Hades, he stumbled across Hazel, who was just sitting there contemplating about her life. Nico brought her back to life and sent her to Camp Jupiter. Pluto is the god of hell and riches. Hazel inherited the riches part from her father. She could summon any form of precious things from anywhere, and she could also go anywhere when she's underground. She could pop up anywhere she wanted. Cool!

Percy regained his memories bits by bits. After he drank the gorgon blood, his memory started to return fully. I kind of like to see him fighting while he had not regain full memory. I mean, it's like he fought like a seasoned warrior but he didn't know how he could do that. Lol.

I especially like what Hazel had said about Percy, in compare with Jason, during his amnesia.

They had the same aura of quiet power, plus a kind of sadness, like they'd seen their destiny and knew it was only a matter of time before they met a monster they couldn't beat.

When Percy's memory was fully recovered, his sass and everything are to the max. XD You could literally see it in his speech. Or I am just imagining things.

Love the book!! Because there's Percy in it. :)

Next one, Annabeth and Argo II are coming!!

442 - IFINISHEDTHELOSTHEROWOOHOOOOO!!

As the title stated, I finished reading The Lost Hero, on Tuesday 7th of September. The first book of the Heroes of Olympus series. Yipeee :)

#1 The Lost Hero

This book introduced us to 3 new characters: one lost demigod and two new heroes. Jason, Piper and Leo.
The Last Olympian has included the first chapter of this book as a bonus, so I kinda just glance through the first chapter and straight to the second chapter.

Ok. So, Jason is the son of...Lord of the Sky, but for some reason, he referred his Father as Jupiter, Zeus's Roman form. And the terms he used were of Romans. e.g. faun (satyr in Greek). That got everyone confused and weird out when the trio reached Camp Half-Blood. But Chiron was tad bit shocked to see him, saying that he should be dead.

At first I thought, okay, maybe Jason was like, I don't know, a Jason that lived many, many years ago, and then somehow stopped in time and magically reappeared again (see Nico and Bianca's story). But later on, it was revealed that he was in fact born at the current time, and the presumed dead brother to Thalia. Wow. That's interesting.

I'm not going into the plot line, you should just read the book. Anyway, I find Jason's way of handling his sword so damn cooooooool. I mean, he flipped his coin and grabbed a sword out of it. I forgot what the other side of the coin came out with, a spear? Along the story, you could actually see how well he handled himself in battles. I am lost of words in how to describe the way he moves in battles. Percy's a pen to Riptide, Jason's a coin to sword... Did it have a name?? I might have missed it.

And HE.CAN.FRICKIN.FLY. Thalia was shooooooooook when she learnt that. A big contrast on her dislikes of heights. I wonder whether Thalia could do that, flying and controlling the wind. Did she ever summon lightning before? Can't remember...

I like Thalia's Hunter wardrobe. Silvery. All of the Hunters make me think of Elves from Middle Earth. Light travelers.

I didn't really like Piper in the beginning of the story. I mean, I normally don't read stories in a girl's POV. Initially, reading Piper's chapters is a bit hard for me. Well, it is just the way it is FOR ME. Don't judge. I didn't say that it is not good, it is just not for me, OK?

Anyway, towards the end, her character growth is there to be seen, and her confidence started to build up, that's where her character turned interesting. Confident Piper is the best Piper.

And Leo, all he wants is a place to feel at home. Poor boy. and he found a connection with the bronze dragon. :)

Anyway, the book ended with a lead to where Percy might be. And as you could tell, Percy didn't appear in this book. XD But his presence is a ever there. LOL. Because of mentions, because of photos.

In the next book, Annabeth's Seaweed Brain PERCY IS BACK.

I bought the next two books on Wednesday, after watching Mechanic in MBO. Just to  make it reach RM50 to get a chance to win the Grand Prize, a proton Suprima S. I just want a car that's fuel efficiency. RAV 4 is too... much.

Mechanic: Resurrection was all right. Not so much on the story plot, but Bishop is good. I like to see him planned his kill. His sketches!!! I want that notebook!! Sketches are beautiful! And since the first target is in Malaysia, I find myself lucky to be watching it here in Kuching. :) Well, it's always funny to hear a bit of Malay and see exchange of Malaysian ringgits as a change to American places and money. I mean, they even used Malaysian prison. I don't know whether it's real or not, but still, it's refreshing to see different prisons.

And Mr.Bishop's agility. Man, he swam here and there. LOL. And he travels light. Not much pockets for stuffs. Just a gun or two, and silencer. Overall it is all right. Not high rating, but I enjoyed the fightings. XD

Mother's 观察日记
hmm... Mother's back pain is going on and off. And recently, it is happening at unexpected time. Well, at least she has longer time of not having the pains after taking stronger doses, and there's no more headaches. That makes her appetite better.

Stay well everyone. If there's in fact a one, reading this.

:)

441 - mid-book update

I am just so ....eager aren't I.

I'm halfway through the book on the right, yet, I went and bought the book on the right. It's not even next on the series. It's the last book on the series, the 5th book in the series to be exact.

The size cost RM10. ...

I want to get this... bigger edition. Because sometimes I like my books in odd sizes, despite giving me a headache when I'm arranging them on the shelves.

Hahahaha

The Lost Hero is the first book of the Heroes of Olympus series. :) Yep, I've stopped reading Greek Heroes and started on the new series.

It took me quite some time to get into the book, because of the different point of views, and also, it's not Percy's narrative view. Anyway, the new heroes and demigod is still coooooool. Although alternating among 3 different POVs is still a bit difficult. For you see, you would develop a skew. You might prefer this POV over the other ones and such, and make reading the POVs other than that person a bit hard.

LOL. Choices make experience difficult to endure.

The Church's Parish Sale is this Saturday. I'm there to help out my younger brother (my cousin) selling...soya bean drink. XD

440 - some books I read recently

Hullo there.

Anyway, I just want to update about the books I read, recently. There are a few....

I have been into Percy Jackson series lately. I started with The Lightning Thief somewhere mid-year last year. And then hit on full throttle just recently.

Percy Jackson books are written by Rick Riordan.

#4 Percy Jackson and The Battle of The Labyrinth

In this book, we started to see Nico's power developed. You know, rising the dead is a big deal, no matter what situation you are, or when. I find it both eerie and exciting to see a kid this small performed that, the same as I first saw/read Percy went on demi-god mode.

I like the maze, kinda. You wouldn't know who or what you might run into (that's the whole point of a maze, duh). The automatons are so cool!!! I kept picturing them as golden robots walking around...

...I should be doing this right after I finished book, not days and books later.

#5 Percy Jackson and The Last Olympian

The last book of the series. I kinda dreaded it, because it is the last, but continued on anyway. I just lovveee Percy's narrative view. I will practically read anything as long as it's in  Percy's narration and written by Rick the author himself.

Ok, back to the book. Hmmm... Oh ya, the battle got into the climax stage. I mean, they are going along with the prophecy. Fighting, plotting, and stuffs. And man the Titans are strong!!! And the Hope in the box thing.

Centaurs in Percy's worlds are crazy, most of them. I realised that once again. XD Partying, partying and partying.

Arrgh.... I really should have done this days ago!!! I can't even formed accurate facts from the book right now!!! Geez... what memory I have. Goldfish.

Percy Jackson and The Greek Gods

This is interesting! I didn't realise until yesterday that the book was published after the Heroes of Olympus saga. Yet I read it before starting that series. Urgh.

Anyway, this book tells the stories of the 12 Greek Gods, in Percy's view. Yay! Personally, like Percy, I really think Poseidon's a cool guy. Hahaha... I find it living in the sea kind of cool. I mean, the whole domain is practically his. Zeus, living in the Sky, has to like share the space with the other Gods, even if they are not there 24/7. But Poseidon has his own ... world-like domain. It's different when you are in the Sky than in the Sea. .. Hades is the same too! In fact, Hades is so much different!

Next would be Hephaestus, the Greek God of blacksmiths, craftsmen etc. He has the means to stay cool, and people can't just go and mess with him and leave unharmed. Despite all this, he rather tend to his works than go around starting a war with any of the gods. He can be mean if wants to.

That's that.

The Demigod Files

My copy is a film-tied in edition, meaning Logan Lerman is on the cover. It includes small size posters of Percy, Annabeth, Grover, Hades and Zeus. I wonder where the hell is POSEIDON.

Inside included a map of Camp Half-Blood and three short stories. Anyway, I just don't want to miss anything with Percy in it.
  • Percy Jackson and the Stolen Chariot
  • Percy Jackson and the Bronze Dragon
  • Percy Jackson and the Sword of Hades
Spoilers! Not much. Just skip it if you are planning to read it, I just don't want to ruin the fun, though it's not much.

Anyway, Stolen Chariot is centered around the Children of Ares. It shows the relationship between a Demigod child of Ares and the Immortal children of Ares. The brothers Phobos and Deimos (fear and terror) chariot-jacked Clarrise while she was taking their Father's chariot for a ride. ...

Bronze Dragon is centered around Beckendorf, demigod sired by Hephaestus. While playing capturing the flag, Percy and Beckendorf accidentally came across some huge ants moving bronze dragon body parts into their ant nest. Beckendorf realised that it was the legendary dragon that the Hephaestus cabin built to guard the Camp many, many years ago. ...

Sword of Hades, surprise, is about things happening down under. This time the children of the big three teamed up to find this sword which happened to be a dangerous weapon that could wield the dead to rise. ...

I like the Hades story. Well, actually I like to see the interactions going on between the 3. It is tad bit different from the way they interact outside the three of them. That's just my opinion anyway.

James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl

I watched the film adaptation when I was just a small......... when I was young. I couldn't really remember how old I was, but I still vaguely remember how I felt towards the film.

I couldn't recall much, I didn't know what it was but I do now. It has a stop-motion animation! I mean, ya, initially it was live action, and then while Henry was crawling into the peach, he gradually changed into a stop-motion animation character! And suddenly everything in the peach has turned stop-mo animation and it is just normal. It's interesting that they used this changed to show that Henry had entered a peculiar place, and peculiar things were happening to him, like changing into clay.

I used to be afraid of the sea-monster lurking in the sea. It has huge scissor-sharp teeth in its circular month. And the peach was gonna dropped right in the middle of it. Something like that, or I am just making this up I can't remember. After I read the book, there's nothing like that(?). I remember the seagulls! I love that scene. And the rainbow-men. That's new to me.

I tried to understand what Mr.Dahl is trying to convey in the story, but I just can't get my head around it. Maybe I need more time to think over it, OR, I am just overthinking it and it is just a story.

Yeah~

438 - And a Happy New Year~

Hey ya~

Happy New Year~!!!

I planned to post this on the last day of 2015, but then.... hahahahahaha..

So, it's ..erm... 12 days into 2016, how's thing? Still hangover Christmas holidays??? lol

Anyway, I just wanted to update that I've read two books in between the posts.

The Curse of the Gloamglozer

Well, I've put that book on hold for quite sometime. I borrowed the book sometime in 2014... and didn't get the time to finish it. I went on and collected the other books in the chronicles. I preferred the old version of cover designs, and so didn't think twice about getting the latest edition. I went to the Sunday market and found one in the second hand book shop! Looked new, but dented. I still bought it anyway. I occasionally came by one or two of the same version in bookstores, snatched them straightaway. I can't seem to find the first and second book anyway, from the same version. So, internet shopping~ ~ Finally, collected the first trilogy in the chronicles, all from the same version, I hoped so. One and two are previously owned though.

Anyway, about the book. I like the authors, to be blunt. And I like the illustrations too! Mr. Chris Riddell's illustrations are beautiful. I find myself looking at magazines or book covers twice when I realized that they were from him. I think, I could point out his work more and more easier these days. XDDDD Really like it. It's unique!

Back to the book. They created a totally new world. I mean, flying rocks and learning about the weather: conjuring clouds, reading the mist etc... I find that interesting, but I wouldn't want to learn any of that. I would get really frustrated. hahahahaha...

Quint and Maris. Oooo I like these two~~~~~~. I roughly know what would happen in the relationship, and it makes reading the early stages of the relationship interesting. Erm... describing it subtly. ......

Some parts are bloody....

I finished another book too, before the year 2015 ended.

Percy Jackson and the Titan's Curse.

Ooooo I've waited for quite sometime. I kept browsing the library for the copy, but they're always borrowed by someone else. In the end, I got my own copy. I bought the next book too. XDDD

Yeahhhh

Two books~~~

And I'm going back to Malaysia for the holidays!

yyeahhhhhhhh

Durarara!!x2 結 started!!! 啊啊啊啊啊 小靜好帥!!!!!!!!!

435 Happy Birthday Father!!

Haiyaaaaaa

Yepp. Happy Birthday Father!

...

I finally finished the last book of Narnia.

THE LAST BATTLE.

My very own copy. Kind of ... not that new anymore. Wuuwaaaaa... Even the pages are yellow. I've been wondering whether to buy the illustrated version, besides it's hardcover. As a token of reading the whole series ^^ ...

Wohoooo After all these time. I've been holding this book for tooooo long. Didn't really break the record of longest reading time, but still, too long for my liking, especially...erm.. this genre and targeted audience. No offence, but I expected myself to finish this book much earlier.

I don't have much to say about the book. I roughly know what the end would be beforehand. But I didn't know there's so much big ... "renovations". Hahahahahaha

I like that, from the authors description, everything seems beautiful. No matter what he described, in my opinion, they are beautiful. Be it describing hilltops, swamp or anything. Besides that, I like narrative stories.

Anyway, I finished yet another Classic. Yeah!

Annnnnnddd!! My Q mug has arrived!!! Straight from Britain!!! It's beautiful!!!!

434

Looking at the post dates.... This is my 4th post of the year!!! hahaha!!!!! What've I been doing?!!! Neglecting my own self-reflecting time and space.

It’s DECEMBER!!!! Last month of the year 2015!!!! OMG. How time flies!! Awww.. that’s lame. Everyone knows time flies swiftly.

Time runs past fast and quietly. You noticed that during the beginning of a new year and towards the end of a year, whereas in the middle of the year, time seems to snail its way instead.

I FINALLY FINISHED THE FIRST BOOK OF LORD OF THE RINGS!!
FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING!!
YIPPPPPPEEE

I didnt finish the book in a row. In the beginning, there's read, stop, read, stop... and then stop......... (well, I needed to return the book to the library at some point, due date...). And then read, read... For the second time onwards, I read it nonstop. I mean, roughly a chapter a day, to keep myself going. Or else I would never see the end of the book by the end of the year.

Well, the movie was quite different from the book actually. Besides the main story line. The little details, interactions and stuffs are different. The changes made in the movie didn't affect the story, but it kinda showed the movie makers' take on the book. The characters have more scenes on them, I think, instead of being sidelined?? I don't know. Maybe it's because I took such a long time to finish the book, I couldn't recall all the interactions between the characters.

Anyway, the books are much more detailed. The movies give beautiful backdrop and scenes and character details to further enrich the story.

When do I start on the The Two Towers??? Or finished my other books first...

Recently.... I'm kind of ...deep into seiyuu dimension, or 2.5 dimension, which I normally refer it as. Of all, I really like Ono-san's voice. I find it really soothing sometimes, for some anime.

This blog is still breathing!!

Just really, really, really, shallow.

Barely there. = =

Well, I just can't seem to find the right timing, right mood to do some updates.

Ok...

I'll update something...

about what?

Oh ya, I am really into online shopping recently. Hahahahaha I've been buying lots of comics via the Internet XD from Taiwan and Japan.

I've gone a bit...mental. No restriction....

These are those that arrived today. It's been a month since the senders sent these. They're from China (Taobao). My first Taobao XD Their customs took quite some time to clear. It's just some postcards, phone covers etc.

Concert goods.~~~~ The bags are really nice~~~~~

my anime stuffs~~~~~~~~~ 两位都好帅~ 小静好帅~~~ 鬼灯大人也是~

手机壳,终于有了~~ 一次性买了三款。

Also, the How to train your dragon's 12 book is out in the bookstores!!!! Since they release the art cover of the book, I have wanted the hardback, just because. It's the last book!! But I can't seem to find any of it in Chch. I think I will just buy it online. Hehehehehehehehehehehehe

I was surprised that the latest volume was much taller than the others. I remember my friend saying that the latest book was a bit "special" and different from the others. I didn't think that it would be taller than the others XD I didn't know that it would reach Chch this fast. I expect it to arrive like at the end of September.

I WANT HARDCOVER! I WANT HARDCOVER! I WANT HARDCOVER!

hmmm.... about life in Uni. I'm in my last semester now, hopefully. Currently taking only 2 courses. I hope, I don't give myself any lame excuses for poor results at the end.

427 - another book, yeah!

The Graveyard Book.

I finished the book some days ago!

I realized that my reading pace of the book was slow. I mean, it’s quite an “OK” pace initially, but then, it started to go downhill when I found another book… SPOOK’S.

Yup. I think I’m heading into another fandom once again. This is a whole new fandom. I know the movie is coming out next year, but trust me, that’s not what really got me into the books. Well, the movie pointed out the book for me, but I didn't pick it up yet. Later while looking for new books on dragons in the library, I saw this art cover of a girl, a really badass girl in my opinion. And well, that’s kind of cool and dark, I thought. And realised that it was from the SPOOK’s series. This got my interest. Following that, I bought 3 hardcovers from Whitcoulls for $3, meaning $1 each. CHEAP! And they were hardbacks you know! They were all SPOOK’S. I always like hardbacks, so, once I saw the genre I like and in that price, I grabbed everything up.

… I kinda side tracked there. I was supposed to be talking about The Graveyard Book.

OK. This is mine…4th…? book from Neil Gaiman. Actually, this is my first interest in Neil Gaiman’s book. But along the way, I found Coraline and started reading that first.

The Graveyard Book was about a boy who lives in the graveyard with his foster parents and guardian and other inhabitants in the graveyard. Every chapter has title, like every book has. Reading along, I realized that the book is about the Bod’s time in the graveyard. With every chapter, Bod aged. Not a day or 2 but weeks or months, or sometimes, years. By the end of the book, he’s grown up to be a young man.

I’m not going into the summary of the book as there’s no point doing that. I bet there are others who wrote wonderful summary or synopsis about it. Anyway, I like the settings and characters of the stories. I mean, come on, it’s about a boy living in a graveyard. How do you think a boy can survive in a graveyard? Also, he lived in the graveyard since he was an infant or maybe a toddler.

As you might have suspect, the ‘people’ in the graveyard raised him. He had the Owens as his foster parents and a mysterious man as his guardian. His parents raised him and his guardian took care of Bod’s needs to survive. Like bringing food and stuffs.

There are a few things I like in this book. It’s that Bod’s interactions with the graveyard inhabitants are natural! It might be that he never left the graveyard so it seems normal to him to talk to ghosts and stuffs. Besides that, he had lessons from them too! He had respective teachers to teach him about things that we normally didn’t learn in school. For example, types of people, how to Fade and stuff. By the end of the book, Bod even learned how to Dreamwalking! It’s where he walked into the other’s dream and projected his own thoughts to either terrify others or talk to them.

I find it kind of sad at the end. As a living boy, Bod would need to leave the dead world to venture into the living world. Well, like most children books do, it teaches a child about growing up. You stepped out of your comfort zone and explore the world. The help from your family will be limited and you would need to take risks. From what I learnt from How to train your dragon books, growing up is really, a painful and bittersweet progress.

awww......... I'm still a bit ...sad about it. But, need to grow up!

425 - another book, yeah.

I finished another book. Oh yeah~ This time, it's still a children book~

<Odd and the Frost Giants> by Neil Gaiman. LOL

Recently I've been collecting his books from the libraries. I still have another 3 of his books to finish~ For some reason, I'm excited about <The Graveyard Book>. But I'm gonna read it after <M is for magic>.

I'm halfway through <M is for magic>. It's a book full of short stories. Personally, I like the Troll Bridge, Don't Ask Jack, October in the Chair and The Price. That's my current progress. I like how the stories were told. I'm terrible at describing things, so I wouldnt say much about the stories.

Anyway, life is good, I think, so far. But I'm coming down with a small fever, I suspect. I feel pain all over my body, my ears are really sensitive and painful sometimes, my fingers and legs are cold. Plus, I can't breath properly. aih... my throat hurts few days ago...

Sick.

All I can do now is that I better get better. There's final exam of course coming this Wednesday and I have a revised report due that Friday and another 2 reports due the following week. So, yeah, kind of busy.

This is 300 level, what did you expect???

Oh ya, I havent put in form to rent the graduation gown. I saw the form, and prices, and damn. IT'S SO EXPENSIVE!!!! AND WE PAYING FOR 2! Why does it cost so much?! It's just a gown!! I bet tons of people rent it every year!!! Why do you still need to charge that much?! I know it's for some charity and bla, but....... sheeshhhhh!!! It's not like I'm buying it or anything! Hell! I have never bought a shirt or gown that expensive, period.

...................... Spring is coming! The trees have started to bloom. It's quite a beauty in school.

424 - Coraline .....

< CORALINE> - Neil Gaiman

I finished another book this year! Yeah!

Once again, the book’s main audience target is children, so, another children book added to my read books. Haha.

I saw the movie I think, part of it. I remembered the ending scenes....

Coraline, the book, obviously, is about a girl named Coraline. The book started where Coraline and her family had just moved into this new old house. The whole house was not theirs, but just a floor. I think that was what the description meant, an apartment, something like that. She had some strange neighbours: a couple of old weighed ladies who used to be stars on stages staying with their dogs, living below them; and an old man with his instrument-playing mouse living upstairs.

From what I read about Coraline in the book, he was kind of a quiet girl. She played by her own, she spent her time exploring, and her parents did not bother about her and seem to be constantly busy. Between the lines, we could understand that her parents did not give her what she wanted and tend to give her things that she did not want. Her father cooked recipe food that Coraline dislike, her mother bought clothes that Coraline thought was boring. Besides that, not many interactions could be seen between Coraline and her parents. In some scenes, there might be some hint that her mother seemed cold towards Coraline. Her father though, the first impression I got was that Coraline constantly seeing her father’s back.

The apartment was old. They had this drawing room where they kept grandmother’s old furniture. In that room, there was a door that was kept locked at all times. Coraline was curious as to where the door would lead to. She asked her mother about it. Her mother took out a old black key and swung the door open. Instead of a room or hallway, there was a brick wall. Her mother explained that the brick wall was constructed to separate their current apartment from the next, something like that.

One day, she was bored. Curiosity got the better of her. Coraline retrieved the key from the shelf in the kitchen and opened the strange door. This time though, the door swung open and revealed a dark hallway. Again, with curiosity, she walked into the dark hallway and realized that she was walking on something similar to the carpet in the drawing room. Not only that, the wallpaper was similar too. And then, she was there. She was confused as the room she arrived in was very similar to her one in her home. And then, she heard someone calling for her that sounded like her mother. She reached for the sound source. There she found a woman that looked like her mother, but instead of eyes with pupils, the woman had black buttons as eyes.

Button eyes! Wow. That’s really… eerie. The more you thought about it, the scarier it became. Maybe because I am thinking about it in reality context. …..No….I don’t want to venture into that.

After meeting her other mother, Coraline went around and met other residents in this strange world. She met the old ladies downstairs, but here, there were not old and heavy weigh, but young and slim with button eyes. Here, the dogs talked. Next, she met with the old man living upstairs of her apartment. Here, Coraline realized that the mouse played the instruments. Back into the other house that was not her real house, her father cooked non-recipe food. Coraline was delighted and ate everything. She went into her other room and found that everything in the room was different from her own real room. Weird toys and Halloween-type clothes. Her other mother and other father wanted her to stay with them. She left the house and went back to her real house.

Sometimes later, her parents disappeared. She had no choice but to go through the hallway and back to the other house to look for her missing mother.

Now, that was brave. I did not really say anything about her feelings, but she was kind of scare during her previous visit. She was terrified of her other mother.

To retrieve her parents from the other mother and go back to her real home, she challenged her other mother. She made a deal to look for the missing children’s and her parents’ souls. With the help of the stone and occasionally, the strange talking cat, she managed to find all objects that contained the missing souls. Her other mother was not happy about her success. But Coraline managed to find her parents in the end and hurried back to her real home before the strangely lively dark hallway swallowed them up. Coraline locked the door and kept the key close to her. This is not the end though, there was something scattering around at night in the hallway.  With some advice, she realized what it was. She came with a plan to trap that thing and stopped it from disturbing her further on.

Her plan was brilliant! I mean, for her age.  Also, that thing that scattered around, that was creepy. The way the author described the hand with the bone and stuff.  Another thing that really crept me out was the scene where Coraline met the thing that used to be her other father. Oh man!!!! That was creepy and scary!! I don’t know!!! I don’t watch scary movies so… argh… This stuff easily creeps me out.

Anyway, I enjoyed the book. But it took me roughly a month to finish = = I got side track easily. I didn't read other books though. Just that I stop reading and do other things. I like how the book built up the eeriness of the slowly, but steadily.

I have these favourite quotes in the book:

‘It wasn't brave because he wasn't scared: it was the only thing he could do. But going back again to get his glass, when he knew the wasps were there, when he was really scared. That was brave.’
‘…when you’re scared but you still do it anyway, that’s brave.’

I borrowed the book from the public library. I went to look for hardcover copies in the bookshops, but no, they don't have any. Most books are paperback, I want hardback.

417

Hello~~~~~~~~

Mid-term break is over and second term of the first half year of 2014 has started~
Aren't you excited?! !!!!!

NOPE.

It was a 3 weeks term break. How awesome it was!!! During that time, I left my assignment till the last half week and that was when I realized I have a mid-term test on Monday, the first day of second term.

OH HELL…. Everything breaks loose.

It was kind of disaster. Talking about my attitude actually. You see, I’m LAZY.. V-E-R-Y LAZY. So, when I found out that I have a test coming out, you still put everything to the last minute!! I didn't even think of finishing my assignment as soon as possible! I mean, I've been wanting to finish it off since the second week, and yet, there I was, still wandering around without even open a Word document to write something. NOPE. I am just too lazy.

Anyway, I finished my assignment officially on Sunday, around 1pm. So, you think I would go straight into study? Hell ya I did!!! I pulled out my lecture notes and looked at the questions and started patching the answers from the readings. But, my motivations and enthusiasm kinda … slipping away with every minute of my concentration. At the end I kinda just aimlessly surfing the web. HAHAHAHA!

Browsing the web, looking at food pictures in tumblr…. Till the library closed at 4pm. HA!! That’s when I got kinda frustrated with myself. We didn’t head home, we went to the school library. There, I did do my study…really now. I don’t have much time to study next day before my test. I have lecture and lab back to back till 6pm, and 6pm was the start of my test time, till 8pm. Well, lab normally don’t end that late, so.. there’s like roughly an hour for me to try and cramp everything I can into my mind. Well, that outcome wasn’t pretty.

I got two of the well-learned short essay questions in the test, good for me. And I practically tried to rack my brain to put everything I remember into my writing. But well~ I’m not good at that. I ended up forgetting parts of it. Later when I told my sis about it, she said….and I forgot what she said. I was thinking about that just seconds ago! Heck! Now I don’t remember things that not far away ago so you just imagine what my test answer looked like. = = And for the MCQ (multiple choice questions, yup.. I still get that sometimes. Especially Psych’s test.), I totally… freaked out on those. To be honest, I didn’t quite any part of the materials for MCQ. I kinda focused on the short essay questions. You see, I was kind of confident with that, with just 3 questions, you could get 45%!!!! Well.. we know how that turn out now.

So… nothing more to comment on this anymore.

We had BK’s burgers and McD’s nugget for dinner that night! Hehehehehehehe~~~ I know I was kind of depressing then, but me sis said there’s nothing you could do about that and let’s just celebrate that you’ve just got something done. Ya. I’ll live with that.

It’s Wednesday. My sis turn to have her test from 6-8pm. Now I’m wondering what we are going to have for dinner……Takeaway definitely. I wouldn’t want to cook when I get home at this hour. It’s just a waste of time. And I wouldn’t be able to eat till maybe later than 9pm. And really, I have ran out of idea what to cook… I really hate that there’s always someone asking what am I eating every night. That’s makes me wanna slap my food on that said person’s face. I would tell if I want to, but asking as if it’s a routine every day? That’s really frustrating! And if I have the same food I mean, within a week, the word “again” would be heard.

Oh MAN!!!!!! SHUT UP!!!! GO AWAY!!!!!!!

IT’S SO STRESSFUL SOMETIMES TO EVEN THINK OF DINNER!! You see, after washing my hair, I would DEFINITELY NOT COOK. I just had my hair wash, why would get it oily so fast?! It would get oily in just 2 days maybe and I would cook by then. Next, I am very particular with the ingredients used. Say, I want to cook Green Curry. If there’s no potatoes, there’s a VERY HIGH CHANCE that I’m not going to cook that; if I want to cook black sauce pork or beef, no preserved mushroom, not cooking. … My sis got frustrated with me sometimes, saying that I’m soooo difficult. Ya. I am. So? I’m not making anyone miserable, just meself and her. No big deal. Besides, I’m not an adventurer.

I said this many times, I don’t eat things that I have no idea what it is. For example, when I try something new, I REALLY WANT TO know what it is made of, what are the ingredients and stuffs. And if I don’t like it, I AM NOT EATING. If I do eat it eventually, it’s because I’m ….. “giving you face”. Not that I like it. Please appreciate my trying effort. Don’t continue on ranting that I’m “lousy” or I’m not “adventurous”…..Just don’t. I have heard of that for maaaaannny years. You have no idea. Unless I said so, not everything tastes nice to me if I did indeed eat whatever is offered. Please DON’T ASSUME. I don’t try things that I have no idea what its basic taste is. It might end up revolting to me and I really hate that experience. I have tons of things that would make me throw up, so no, thank you. I don’t want to add another into the list.

Hmmm… and then I realised… I closing myself off more and more… I rarely let me mask off in front of others…. Beside my family and close friends…I think. Sometimes, not even my family know what I’m thinking. Hahaha….. I don’t share…. That’s why.

Awww… it’s still another hour to go before sis finished her test……

What to eat tonight????????????????!!!!!

Oh ya… my birthday greetings last month. I had a friend that greeted me on time! (at their time zone of course ~) Thank you~!!!

And also to the wishes via text messages! Overseas and locals! I really appreciate it!!!

Another thing I want to write down in this entry. I finished the second Hiccup book!!!! Yippee!!!!!!!! I spent the whole day, roughly, to finish it! HAHAHA. You see, I have only 2 lectures today. XD

About the book, once again, I really think that it’s not a very happy story. But still, it’s not tragedy…uptill now. I’m glad of the little successes when the story progress. I mean, I like it when Hiccup came out of dangerous situations successfully, although no one seems to think twice how he did that. But I really like that part of him. His sarcastic and quick thinker!! Awwww and Toothless is just…. Cute in his own ways. Maybe it’s just reading too much into the lines, but I think that Hiccup and Toothless relationship is getting smoother. I mean, Toothless is still lazy and stubborn, but he still get things done when Hiccup ask him too, with promises of rewards of course. HAHA. I like that he doesn’t abandon Hiccup when they encounter dangers. There’s a scene where the other dragons shouted “Desert” when they saw some bigger, deadlier dragons running towards them. Then went and wanted to abandon their masters…

Well, the second book was nice too!! Really enjoyed it! :D It’s a nice past time~~~~~~~ Sometimes when I read about the stupidity of the Hooligan Tribe, I really want to just pluck them out and bang their heads together. Really… they don’t think….
